This news is sad & shocking at the same time: Earlier this week, the Dutch government revealed that coal company #Uniper has already taken the first formal step in suing the Netherlands over the country’s decision to phase-out coal by 2030. 😔 Uniper wants to sue under the #EnergyCharterTreaty, which grants big business huge powers to sue states for huge amounts in taxpayer money – for example, if a government decides to #EndCoal or to stop oil or gas pipelines. Uniper could claim €1bn in damages for lost future profits ‼️ According to NGO Client Earth, this shows how fossil fuel companies will try to get #ISDS compensation for their stranded assets.
